UCI 2019 Lunar New Year Festival
Monday January 28, 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM
The UCI Lunar New Year festival is made possible through the generous support of the Long US-China Institute, at UCI and its partners, the School of Social Sciences, School of Law, and Paul Merage School of Business in concert with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, School of Humanities, and UCI Libraries.
2:00 p.m. l Behind the Story of President Nixon's Historic Trip to China
The images of President Nixon in China are iconic – the handshake with Zhao Enlai upon arrival, the meeting with Mao Zedong, the visit at the Great Wall, and, of course, the signing of the Shanghai Communique. Just as interesting as the visit to China is are the behind-the-scenes planning that went into it. For the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration, UCI Social Sciences and the Long US-China Institute welcome the Richard Nixon Foundation, and Dr. Luke Nichter, from Texas A&M University-Central Texas to explore the archival records considering Nixon’s historic trip, as well as the implications and lessons that still reverberate today.
